Default Thinkin bout goin old school on a trolling rod..your opinion please.

I was thinking about going old school on a rod that will be used solely for trolling and maybe bottom fishing. I've got a chance to get a Calstar WC 6455XH real cheap and found a 6/0 with a Tiburon frame. Would this work for 80lb if I loaded the reel with 80 or 100lb braid and a top shot of 80?

Kind of an old school idea with a new school twist. Anyone think this would work?

Don't know why not. It worked on the albacore, and school blue fin for 30 years.

What he said. But assuming that you are trolling for albacore, bluefin and schoolie yellowfin, you can use straight mono if you want because capacity will not be an issue (although you will have to replace it reguarly while spectra lasts for many years). A 6/0 will probably hold a LOT of spectra.

Sounds good to me. I still troll on short trips with a glass Seeker 6460XH and a 6/0 with a Tib frame with straight 80# mono. I wouldn't bother with spectra, straight 80 will get it done for both trolling and dropper loop.

What you describe is standard trolling gear. So long as you don't use it for the big boys on the 15 day type trips, it will do fine.

The only reason I want spectra is for wahoo. Or would a 6/0 hold enough straight 80lb for even a hoo?

The 6/0 will hold more than enough for wahoo, but the problem would be the low gear ratio of that reel. If that hoo runs at you you'll never be able to take up enough line to keep it tight.

It would be like bringing a knife to gunfight.

I think they?ve been making them for about 70 years and there have probably been more troll fish caught on 6/0?s than on any other reel in the history of San Diego Sportfishing.

The 114 is 2.1:1 and 114H is 2.8:1 (I think) and given the diameter of the spool on a 6/0 seems like it ought to pick up line pretty quick.
