Default Gas Tax Is Coming

We import 72% of our energy and are now paying at a $800 billion a year clip and 2/3 of the usage is transportation. Does anyone think this can go on forever? I am certain that there will be a change in structure of taxes on road fuels in the next 4 years and the only question is how to structure the tax so that it moves the US toward less use of road fuel. Could be a rearrangement of the current taxes on road fuel, thru tax rebates and at the pump, or/and an additional tax on gasoline but not diesel, or/and reviving tax credits for purchase of high mileage vehicles like hybrids and PHEVs and anything else that makes the mpg hurdle. You can also bet on a carbon tax slanted towards coal and petroleum plus mortgage deduction penalties for mega-mansions.

We (California) already pay the most of any states as far as gas tax goes. This maybe coming soon to a pump near you.

I'm not talking about state taxes.

Will we get a slight break on the tax if we supply our own petroleum jelly (Vaseline)?

Heavy taxes on carbon based energy, and big tax incentives on solar and other reuseable energy types.

Would seem a rather regressive tax. The "poor" people aren't going to go out and buy a new hybrid and their 80's and 90's gas guzzlers are already paying more taxes per mile via greater consumption per mile.

Quite the fallacy that gov't would actually use any increased revenue from additional gas tax toward eliminating the need for gas. YA ya...just give 'em more money as they are bound to spend it more wisely than the people earning it everyday.

More like an incredibly regressive tax. I?m not so sure the rich are going to start driving econo-boxes when the M5?s program is initiated, although I?m quite sure there?ll be more of the working poor stuck riding the bus and selling their boats.

How much are you going to tax it? The price has gone up 300% in a couple years and we still seem to be using all most as much.

Why not tax it $100 a gallon and use that revenue to fund public transportation. The will get a lot of people to part their cars. Just think how nice the roads will be for all the rich Republicans.

Why not do like they do in Singapore. They only allow so many cars a year to be registered, and they have an auction for the permits. Only the rich (and of ranking government officials) have cars
